E14 and G9 LED Bulbs: Replacements for Decorative Lamps

You have a decorative lamp at home and the last bulb has blown. You look at the base and wonder: which LED can I fit without changing anything? The good news is that there is almost always a decorative E14 candle or G9 LED bulb that fits first time. You only need to know the type of base, the shape and the colour of light you want.

A couple inherited a vintage chandelier with 12 E14 sockets. The old bulbs used a lot of power and gave off a yellowish light. They tried a 6W C37 candle bulb in 2700K, fitted it in place of the old ones and it worked with their usual dimmer. They ordered 12 and didn't touch a single wire.

E14 LED candle bulbs on a chandelier

E14 base for wall lights and decorative lamps

The slim decorative E14 base is the most common one in wall lights, chandeliers and table lamps. It screws in just like a standard bulb, only with a narrower thread. That is why a straight 1 to 1 swap with no building work is possible: you take the old one out and screw the LED in.

If you are looking for an E14 LED bulb for a wall light, check the space first.

C37 candle shape for classic wall lights and chandeliers

The C37 candle shape copies the elongated flame of traditional bulbs. It is the right choice for chandeliers, candelabras and classic wall lights. A 6W E14 C37 LED candle bulb replaces a 40W incandescent and uses far less power. Compared with traditional bulbs, the energy efficiency is much higher.

A C37 candle bulb is cheap, and in a lamp with several arms the saving shows up on your bill.

G45 globe shape for Nordic and modern lamps

The G45 globe shape is round and small. It looks great in Nordic and designer lamps, and in open shades where the bulb is on show. A decorative E14 G45 LED bulb spreads the light more evenly than a candle and doesn't dazzle from the sides.

2700K colour temperature, the best seller for decoration

A warm 2700K colour temperature is the favourite for decoration. It gives a warm white close to the old incandescent bulb, cosy and soft. It is a warm light that makes you want to stay.

A warm 2700K E14 LED bulb works well in living rooms, bedrooms and dining rooms. If you prefer a cool white, go up to 4000K, though it is almost never used in decoration.

Look at the CRI too. With a CRI of 90, colour rendering in decorative lighting is much better. Fabrics, wood and paintings show their real colours instead of looking dull.

G9 base as a direct replacement with no transformer

The G9 bi-pin base running straight on 230V is used in crystal lamps, bathroom wall lights and decorative spotlights. It has two pins and simply plugs in.

There is no transformer inside the bulb, so you don't need to adapt the installation. A G9 LED bulb with no transformer runs directly on 230V.

G9 4.2W Lumileds, equivalent to a 40W halogen

A 4.2W G9 LED bulb with a high-efficiency Lumileds chip is equivalent to a 40W halogen. It is a G9 LED bulb that replaces a halogen, with far less heat at the glass.

With the high-efficiency Lumileds G9 chip you get more light per watt. This LED light source brings a real energy saving compared with conventional bulbs. The 25000h lifespan of this LED bulb is far longer than that of a halogen, which barely passes 2000 hours.

Flicker-free certified for long hours of use

A flicker-free G9 LED bulb with a Lumileds chip avoids annoying flicker. Flicker tires the eyes even when you don't notice it.

If you want to dim it, check that it is a dimmable triac-compatible bulb. A dimmable E14 LED bulb needs a suitable dimmer, and the same goes for the G9.

Hanging vintage filament LED bulbs

Vintage filament bulbs for designer lamps

The vintage gold visible-filament bulb is the star of designer lamps, bars and restaurants. The golden glass and glowing threads give a very recognisable retro look. Being LED, it uses a fraction of what an original Edison bulb did.

Dimmable gold G80 globe with an Edison effect

A vintage E27 G80 LED filament bulb has the shape of a large globe. In a pendant lamp with no shade you see all of it, so it needs to look good. The dimmable gold LED filament bulb lets you turn the brightness down at night. With a compatible triac dimmer, the light changes smoothly and without jumps.

It is a vintage G80 LED filament bulb for a bar, but it also looks good in a kitchen. You can see more models in the hanging LED lamps where it looks its best.

E14 filament candle for retro-style wall lights

There is also a filament candle with an E14 base. It goes in retro-style wall lights and keeps the flame shape of the classic format. To complete the set, look at the compatible LED wall lights.

AR111 lamp with selectable CCT

The AR111 is a bulb with a larger reflector, designed for spotlights and track lights. An AR111 LED bulb with selectable CCT changes the tone of the light with a switch. You don't need to buy another one to change the mood.

Which spaces the AR111 is designed for

It is used in shops, galleries, large entrance halls and living rooms with adjustable spotlights.

Selectable CCT, choose the colour temperature without changing the bulb

With selectable CCT you choose between warm, neutral or cool light with a single product. It is LED technology applied to decorative LED lighting throughout the home. Take a look at AR111 LED bulbs.

Base-to-base equivalence table

This table sums up which LED bulb replaces each type of decorative lamp.

Base Shape Equivalent to Typical use
E14 C37 candle 6W 40W incandescent Chandeliers and classic wall lights
E14 G45 globe 40W incandescent Nordic and modern lamps
G9 Capsule 4.2W 40W halogen Crystal lamps, bathrooms and decorative spotlights
E27 G80 gold filament Edison incandescent Designer pendants and bars
GU10 and AR111 CCT reflector Spotlight halogen Spotlights and tracks

Browse the categories for E14 LED bulbs and G9 LED bulbs. For the filament models, go to E27 LED bulbs.

How to choose the right decorative LED bulb

Choosing well comes down to four details.

First, the base your lamp uses.

Second, the shape that fits in the shade.

Third, the colour temperature you want.

Fourth, whether you will dim it.

Note these down before you buy and you will save yourself returns.

To replace decorative lamps with LED you don't need to touch the installation. Go to LED decoration and complete the set with the bulb that fits best.

Frequently asked questions about E14 and G9 LED bulbs

Which LED bulb replaces a 40W E14 candle?

A 6W C37 LED candle with an E14 base. It gives equivalent light and uses much less power. Choose 2700K if you want the warm tone of incandescent.

Does the G9 LED work without a transformer in my current lamp?

Yes. The G9 LED runs straight on 230V, just like the G9 halogen. You only need to take the old one out and put the new one in.

Can I dim an E14 LED bulb?

Yes, if the bulb is dimmable and your dimmer is compatible. A non-dimmable bulb on a dimmer may flicker or fail.

Do LED filament bulbs give enough light to light a room?

They give a soft, decorative light. To light a whole room, combine several or add spotlights. For a corner or a bar counter, one is enough.

What is the difference between the G80 and G95 filament bulbs?

The size. The G95 is larger and stands out more in designer pendants. The G80 is more compact and fits more lamps.

Does the AR111 LED with selectable CCT suit any AR111 fitting?

It suits most, but check the voltage and the base of your spotlight before you buy.

How much do I save by switching my decorative lamps to E14 and G9 LED?

A 6W LED candle uses a fraction of a 40W incandescent. In a chandelier with 12 sockets the difference on your bill is clear, and the lifespan is also much longer.
